Media Filter

 
Media filters are commonly housed in a Vertical Low Pressure Vessel to incorporate suitable media like Sand for Sand Filters, Sand & Acitvated Carbon for Dual Media Filters and only Activated Carbon for ACF; Media filters are more often operated in lower pressure range of 0-10 Kg/cm2 in order to achieve higher filtration quality & rate instead of gravity filters as used in olden days.

Any Media Filter is subjected to a common routine Maintenance practice as under :

Regular Inspections (usually 3-6 months) to inspect sedimentation chamber and the media surface.

Accurate Maintenance of Flows to and through the Media Filter.

Backwash or Back Flush operation every time at the desired downstream pressure difference.

Removal of accumulated sediments and litter/debris etc from Sedimentation Chamber or changing the media on substantial increase in the frequency of Backwash.

Checking of Sedimentation or Degritting Chamber to ensure the weep holes and overflow weirs are not blocked with debris.

Activated Carbon Filters are primarily with multi layer of Media Filter Bed to capture gross pollutants & retain coarse sediments to achieve fine Filtration of Flows.

Application Considerations :

Activated Carbon Filters are particularly useful in areas where space is a premium and treatment is to be achieved in remote area like underground or Basement.

Due to absence of vegetation (viz; absence of light limits vegetation growth), and deep multi layer penetration of pollutants through dense filter media, the media filters require regular maintenance (backwash) to ensure the surface of the Filter Media remains porous and does not become clogged with accumulated sediments.

Flows generally are subjected to a pre treatment to remove litter, debris and coarse sediments (typically a sedimentation chamber or degritting chamber); followed by inline chemical treatment (if required).

As a thumb rule Sedimentation chamber is designed to retain sediments larger than 125 microns this ensures controls Inlet to any Media Filter further increasing the design flexibility to separate the sediments upto discharge levels of 25 microns to 50microns.  For Larger Industrial Flows Degritting Mechanism in combination with Clarifiers are widely used as pretreatment.

The design leverage solely depends on the Designer choice largely based on Type & composition of Effluent.

We manufacture Media Filters with requisite Frontal Piping as per Process design submitted to us and surface area requirement specified by client. The Mechanical design is carried out as per relevant ASME & IS Standards and a project specific G.A. of the vessel with Frontal Piping is submitted to client for approval.

 

 
   

Trickling Filter

We are specialized in Manufacturing of Trickling Filters upto 200 Ft. Dia. as these are the most ancient Mechanical design and a best example of Natural Sedimentation and widely used for Sewage Treatment Plants.

Common Name :Distributor is a self propelled rotating device for distributing clarified sewage effluent uniformly over a circular bed of filter stone. The rotating motion of the unit is obtained by the reaction of effluent flowing out of a series of orifices spaced along the arms. The effluent trickling through the filter stone bed forms a bacterial gel which has definite absorbing qualities for collodial material and bacteria.

MECHANICAL FEATURES

The Distributor mechanism consists of a central ball bearing turntable to which are attached radial arms usually supported by guy rods from the top of a tubular center column. The base casting is securely bolted on a hollow concrete pier into which the feed pipe terminates. The turntable top is essentially a hollow well arranged to distribute the flow properly to the arms. The turntable contains a mercury seal to prevent escape sewage under all normal operating conditions. In case the seal is blown because of excessive head, the mercury becomes trapped in a special compartment while the sewage flows out through opening in the turntable base without danger of getting into the bearing. The ends of distributing arms are equipped with lever operated quick opening gates or covers to permit flushing while the machine is operating.

PRINCIPLE OF OPERATION

The sewage effluent flows through the feed pipe, up the center pier into the distributing well then into the arms and out of the orifices. The resulting rotation of the arms spreads the sewage uniformly over the entire surface of the filter bed so that every square yard of filter stone is sprayed with substantially the same quantity of effluent. The number and sizes of orifices in the arms have been determined by the expected range of flow and available head.
